 FAQ

Q top What is Dynamic DNS? And why do I need it?
A You need Dynamic DNS when the IP address of your server is dynamic. Many of the Internet users today connect to the Internet via DSL, cable or dialup connection. Most of them are assigned different IP address every time they connect to the ISP. In order to run your own web/ftp/game server or just connect to your computer for any other reason you need to always know your IP address and let everybody else know it. It must be very hard to constantly trace your IP and just think of how to inform others of the change. This is the point when you start thinking of Dynamic DNS service such as 2MyDNS.com. The service like 2MyDNS can make your life easier. You just create an account with us, choose the right service for you, and enter the needed host info. Dynamic DNS service from 2MyDNS.com allows you to inform all other users each time your IP address changes either manually from a web page, or by running a small program that automatically connects to 2MyDNS.com each time it notices that your IP address has changed.

Q top How do I get started?
A To get started, you’ll need to create an account with 2MyDNS.com. First, you must read and agree to our Terms of Service. Then you can proceed to signup page. Go to Login page, then just select what service you’d like to use and add new host in the appropriate section. Good Luck!

A Once you finished setting up your account, you can login and start adding new hosts to different 2MyDNS.com services.

Q top Can I host multiple web sites on one IP address?

For more information please refer to: First, you should create domains, as many as you need, at 2MyDNS.com and point them to the same IP address (your IP address). Then you should configure your web server, so that it understands how to route the requests.

Q top Do you store my web page?

Q top Can I update 2MyDNS HTTP Relay or 2MyDNS Stealth Relay host records with the client application?
A No. All updates and changes to these host records should be done via your browser interface.

Q top Can I use 2MyDNS services for a server behind a cable/DSL router?
A Yes. You’ll have to set up port forwarding on your router; see your router documentation for instructions. Then point your hostname(s) at the router’s external IP as usually, and router should handle sending the right traffic to your internal server.

Q top Can I have multiple hostnames/domains pointing to the same IP?
A Yes. You can have multiple hostnames/domains pointing to the same IP. You’ll need to configure your update client properly, so that it would update different host records in your account once there is a change in your IP address.

Q top I want to run a mail server, but my ISP has blocked port 25. Is there anything I can do?
A No. Unfortunately, you cannot run mail server unless you have port 25 open.

Q top Why can’t people connect to my web/ftp/mail/other server?
A Double check to ensure that your server software is configured and running properly. If you are running any firewall software, make sure it allows inbound connections to the appropriate port (for example, port 80 for web; port 21 for ftp). If you use cable/DSL router, make sure you’ve set up port forwarding properly.
It is also possible that your ISP is blocking inbound connections to the port you need to use. In this case, you can reconfigure your server to a different port and use either 2MyDNS HTTP Relay or Stealth Relay services.

Q top Can I run web server if my ISP blocked port 80?
A Yes, you can. You can redirect HTTP requests to a different port using either 2MyDNS HTTP Relay or Stealth Relay services.

Q top Why can’t I sign in?
A 2MyDNS uses cookies in order to keep track of your login session. If you have turned off cookies in your browser or use cookie blocking software, you will be unable to login to use our services.

Q top I lost my password. What should I do?
A Due to security reasons, we don’t email you the password. We can only reset your password and email you the link to the page where you’ll be able to set the new password. To proceed click here.

Q top How can I delete a host?
A Login to your account. Select the host you want to delete. On the next screen click on "Delete Host" button. Once you delete the host, it cannot be restored, you will have to reenter it as the New Host. Note: You cannot delete the blocked host, you’ll need to contact 2MyDNS.com support for assistance.

Q top How can I delete my account?

Q top How can I enable primary MX?
A Primary MX is not available for FREE users. FREE users can use only Backup MX. Primary MX is available only for PRIVILEGED users. The MX record is created automatically when the new host is created.

Q top What is Backup MX (Mail Exchanger) and how to enable it?
A When you sign up for backup mail exchanger service, you can add your backup email server to the zone record of your host. Please note that backup mail exchanger cannot point to your hostname.
If you need to enable backup MX in 2MyDNS Standard Service, first you should make an arrangement with your ISP or somebody else to use their email server as your backup MX. Then login to your account at 2MyDNS.com. Select the host you want to add it to, and check “Backup MX” option. Also in "Email Exchanger" field, write the name of backup MX you’ll be using.

Q top Does 2MyDNS.com support Round Robin?
A Yes. 2MyDNS.com supports Round Robin. Just create 2 “A” records with the same domain name and different IP addresses, and your visitors will be load balanced between the two servers. Round Robin works only with 2MyDNS Premier Service.

Q top How often can/should I update my hostname?
A There is no need to update your records unless your IP address has changed. If you update your records without IP change more than 3 times within 24 hours, your domain may be blocked for abusive use.
Note: If you are a FREE user, you should force the update even if the IP address remains the same every 25-30 days. This is necessary to prevent your inactive domains (domains that had no updates for more than 30 days) from being deleted. To avoid this and to enjoy other extra features you can upgrade your account to PRIVILEGED user.

Q top I've updated my hostname, why isn’t it working?
A Normally it may take up to 1 minute for the changes to take effect. There may be instances when it may take up to 10 minutes for the changes to take in effect due to different circumstances.

Q top How can I mark my host "offline"?
A There are 2 ways to set your host"offline":
- Using your browser: Login to your account and select the host you need to set "offline". Enter 127.0.0.1 or 0.0.0.0 into IP address field.
- Using your update client: Locate and select "offline" IP option or similar option depending on your client application. For more info, please contact your client support.

A We welcome all new client developers and will be happy to help you. You should visit our tech spec at http://dyn.2mydns.com for more info. If you need any additional info, feel free to email us.

Q top Why does my wildcard setting disappear?
A This may happen if you enabled wildcard option using your browser and after this updated the host records via your update client. The reason for the wildcard option to disappear is that your update client has wildcard option set up to NO. And every time it updates the record, it modifies the host record and disables the wildcard accordingly. The solution is simple; you have set Wildcard option to YES or UNCHANGED depending on the client you are using. For more info, please refer to the client’s support team.

Q top How can I redirect to a different port?
A You can redirect HTTP requests to a different port using either 2MyDNS HTTP Relay or 2MyDNS Stealth Relay services.

Q top Can I redirect something other than HTTP using 2MyDNS HTTP Relay or 2MyDNS Stealth Relay services?
A No. 2MyDNS HTTP Relay and Stealth Relay services are strictly HTTP redirecting services and the only thing they redirect is URL or HTTP.

Q top Can I have my IP address reverse resolved to my hostname?
A No. There is nothing we can do about it. Your ISP controls the reverse delegation for your IP address.

Q top Why can I reach my site at yourname.2mydns.com, but not www.yourname.2mydns.com?
A To make it work, you have to enable Wildcard option.
There are 2 ways to make it work:
- Using your browser: You need to check "Enable Wildcard" option in your host setup.
- Using your update client: Depending on the client application, please contact the support for you client program.
